VISIon

School at Sea is a talent development and leadership programme. You form new insights about the world and yourself. You learn by doing. The only thing you have to do, is open yourself up to new experiences. It can make you more independent and give you more confidence around others. Our programme is focussed on experience-based learning, in which learning is directly linked to what you experience around you.

Making mistakes is fine, but not every kind of mistake is fine. School at Sea encourages you to ask the right questions and come up with a solution or an answer yourself.

It is not just our own vision. Our sail training programme is based on that of the esteemed Sail Training Association Netherlands (STAN). STAN has been allowing thousands of young trainees to experience ocean sailing on traditional tall ships for years. School at Sea is further advised on developmental and educational psychology by prof. dr. Michiel Westenberg.

learning by doing

“Tell me and I will forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand.”

– Confucius

The School at Sea programme is based on this famous saying. By combining theory and practice you will learn and remember more, but also understand why things are the way they are.

independent and responsible

You can do more than you think. School at Sea challenges you to challenge yourself. Little by little, step by step, you will become more independent and take more responsibilities.

That is what we are all about and can be seen in every aspect of the journey, starting from the fundraising programme.

Of course you won’t have to sail the ship yourself on the first day. The first expeditions will be organised by team members. Along the way, this will become your task more and more.

The first ship takeover is a milestone. As a first test of your abilities, the crew will take a step back and you and your fellow students are completely responsible for the ship and everyone on it. Everyone will have a task and together you make it work.

You will eventually plan your own group journey through Panama and Cuba, further developing your independence.

You sail, you learn.
